Scientists in the Commons

Sf6 Third and fourth grade Barton scientists had a chance to show off their experiments and their knowledge in the annual science fair held in the Commons in December.

Each student began with a testable question, and then designed a procedure to test a hypothesis.

Read-a-Thon

Readersweb The reading kids in room 203 challenged themselves to read 150 books in two days.  We agreed upon a ‘standard’ book so students had to read many short books to count as one book, but a chapter book would count as more than one book.  By the end of class on the first day the kids had read over 60 books.  By the end of class on the second day they were up to 147.5 books.  So close!!  A few very dedicated readers used their recess on the second day to push the number to our final 159 books!!  The kids were very dedicated, and learned strategies on how to keep reading for a long period of time.  Some read on the stationary bike for a while, some on the balance board, some moved positions and some took breaks to walk around the school and come back to read again.  The kids (and their teacher) are very proud, and have every right to be.  Thanks to parent organizers Lisa Ceelen and Sue Johnson, and to the generous donations from this great community, these readers were able to raise $124.15 for Barton.

Thank you, sincerely, Samantha Johnson, Deborah Honore, Hussein Hussein, Sydney Ceelen, Lou Olson, Ezra Knight, Tiba Navab, Naomi Osunkoya-Clark, Mohamed Roble, Walker Renz, Walker Arp, Philip Gates and Karin Emerson.

Raffle/Auction/Marketplace Night a Big Success

041210fall_053auction1 The Commons and gymnasium were full last week for this year's Raffle, Auction and Marketplace event.  Music filled the rooms as Barton families bid on auction items, browsed through all kinds of items made by Barton kids in the Marketplace, and waited with bated breath as the winning raffle ticket was drawn.  See details and a list of some of the people who made it happen in this week's Bugle041210fall_056auction2 041210fall_058auction3_1

Visitors from Iceland

Fourteen teachers from Ingunnarskóli, a school in Reykjavik, Iceland, visited us on Tuesday, November 2. They were interested in learning about the philosophy of open education for a new school they were going to be moving into soon. They were viewing the key components of open education as individualized learning, multi-age teaching and project based teaching. They met with grade level teams of Barton teachers throughout the day, visited classrooms and asked a lot questions about how teachers plan and organize their work, how they teach to multi-grades and how student work is evaluated.  They posted these pictures from their visit to Barton.

List of Silent Auction Items is Here

A list of all silent auction items is available for download.  Check back for updates in the right-hand column of this site, under "Auction Updates!"

Reminder: There are also lists of live auction items and activity sign-ups

Don't forget to mark the evening of Thursday, December 9th for the Quilt Raffle and Silent Auction event.
