Students Strive for Balance at Long Lake

145 fifth and six grade students enjoyed another three-day adventure at Long Lake Conservation Center near Aiken from May 9 – 11.  The days were packed with activities where students learned first hand about environmental and animal adaptation, survival and conservation.  Activities included a bog trek, a cooperation challenge course, canoeing, orienteering, archery, a native snake demonstration, preparation of a wilderness meal, bat and deer games, and observation of the woodcock sky dance.  Signs of spring were evident in the woods, bog and lake with wildflowers, fiddlehead ferns, budding tamaracks, baby painted turtles, frogs, a brief downpour and, of course, a few ticks.  Seven world records were broken during the orienteering race!  Participants will long remember these fascinating nature experiences, but also the lessons learned in teamwork, personal responsibility and respect for each other and our environment. My Father's Dragon

1st and 2nd graders from Dawn's classroom became alley cats, wild boars, mice, tigers, lions, gorillas, crocodiles, monkeys, rhinoceros, and dragons to perform My Father's Dragon, a play adapted from the book by Ruth Stiles Gannett, on March 31st.  Classmates worked hard for weeks learning lines and acting cues, making scenery and costumes, and having a great time!  Click here to see more photos from the production!
