New Computers Installed in Media Center

173_7331The media center installed 35 new iMac computers last week, allowing the 34 existing computers to be reassigned to classrooms. Two weeks ago, the Leadership Council approved a funding request which will add 5 additional laptops to the mobile lab used frequently by classrooms.  For more information on these improvements, link to this week's Bugle.

Flu Prevention

Dear Parents:

Flu season is here.  We would ask that you take steps to protect your child and other students at Barton School from illness.  Here are some very simple steps that parents can take to prevent the flu (National Association of School Nurses, 2007):

1.   Vaccinate:  It is not too late for your child to get a flu shot.  Call your health care provider to make an appointment or Hennepin County Public Health Department, (612) 348-2884, for their shot clinic dates and times.  The Minnesota Department of Health has excellent information available including how to locate a nearby flu shot clinic at:  http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/diseases/flu/index.html.

2.   Good Hygiene & Nutrition:  Teach your child to wash their hands often.  They should count to 20 while washing and wash with friction.  It is important that your child eat nutritional meals and snacks to prevent illness.

3.   Know when to keep your child home from school:  If your child has flu-like symptoms like a sudden high fever, aches, and a sore throat, keep your child home from school.

4.   Know when to call the doctor:  If your child has flu-like symptoms, you should consider calling your doctor or clinic immediately.  He or she may prescribe a medication called an antiviral that can treat the flu and reduce complications.  If your child has another health condition, such as asthma or diabetes, this can put them at greater risk for the flu.

If you have any questions or concerns please call the Barton Health Office at 612-668-3580.

Sincerely,

Karen Ward, RN

Eyeful of Eiffel

173_7311_1 A sugar cube church, a Paper Mache Matterhorn, a Lego castle, and a matchstick Eiffel Tower were some of the ways that students depicted noteworthy features of European countries for Room 208’s Geography Fair, held Tuesday, February 13th.

173_7310

The 5th and 6th graders have been studying European geography, and the fair was the finale of their independent projects on a country of their choice.  They showed what they learned to their classmates and to the K - 4th graders they invited.173_7307

Some students put on their chef’s hats and prepared indigenous food from their chosen country.  Fairgoers from the primary grades sampled Ukrainian apple cake, churros con chocolate, Goulash and Czech cabbage, Portuguese sweet bread, Russian tea cakes, French butter cake, and more treats.

Uppers Exhibition Night

172_7285_1 172_7277 The uppers students concluded their first semester on Monday evening with Exhibition Night.  Students shared their work portfolios highlighting progress they have made.  Both teacher and student reflections are included in the portfolios.

The evening began with a final project performance called Breakin' Down Barriers! from the students of Allison's Dance as Art and Culture elective.  The dances were designed, created and choreographed by the students and demonstrated their understanding of the artistic elements, processes and structures in the art of dance.

172_7291_1 172_7288 On Tuesday, uppers students and staff celebrated their milestone with a day of skiing at Buck Hill.

Here are some photos are of student work displayed in the uppers' hallways.
