Workshops for Parents who Would Like to Help Beginning or Struggling Readers!

Thursday Jan 24th
7:40 – 8:40     and    9:00 – 10:00
Room 203

Karin Emerson (reading specialist) will lead a workshop tomorrow morning designed to help parents understand more about the teaching of reading and work successfully with beginning or struggling readers.

Topics covered include:
1. The 5 main parts of reading as agreed upon by just about every reading expert.
2. The “Reading Wars: Whole Language vs. Phonics”
3. What is the most effective ways for parents to help beginning/struggling readers?
4. How can parents help teach comprehension?
5. How can parents encourage reading at home?
6. What do ‘Learning Styles’ have to do with reading?
7. Where do I go if I want more information?
8. Questions and (hopefully) answers at the end!

This workshop is for parents who wish to work at home with their own children, or volunteer at school with other students.  Contact Karin if you would like to come or have questions:  voice mail 612-668-7984 or email kemerson@mpls.k12.mn.us.
