Wolf Ridge Environmental Trip

20080326_0016  Here are just some of the life experiences and great memories the middles students can claim after their three day trip to Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland, Minnesota:

  • chickadee perched on your head and eating from your hand
  • jumping off a 25 foot high platform and zip-lining down to the ground
  • catching your teachers laughing uncontrollably
  • losing your boot in deep snow, and digging for 30 minutes to find it
  • learning to use a compass and find a place based on orienteering instructions
  • noticing a white-tailed deer track between your snow shoes
  • getting stuck on the tight rope and having your friends give you the courage to walk to the end
  • learning how to cross country ski

Pi Day Observed

March 14th    3/14     π     3.1415926...Piday_0002

Uppers and some middles classrooms celebrated this very important mathematics holiday on Friday, March 14 with pie and other events related to roundness.  In Sarah's classroom, there was an Oreo eating contest, and a pi digit memorization contest - with the winner reciting 192 digits!  Thirty pies were ordered in advance and consumed by the uppers (Oreo was the favorite), and many more excellent homemade and pot luck contributions by students.  As thanks for spreading the positive message of mathematics, all staff was invited for pie at 3.1415926 or 3/14 1:59pm 26 seconds.

Bodies in Motion - by Room 120

Evalyn The 1st and 2nd graders in Jane’s class have been studying bodies. Jane and I decided to work with them to use their bodies in different ways while taking photos of each other to see what bodies really look like while they are moving and how to capture that motion on film. Parents Steve Richter, Anne Suri along with myself helped to facilitate the process. The kids had a lot of fun and wanted to share it with all of you so enjoy the photos and the words they had to share about their experience. The photos are also hanging in the hallway outside room 120, please feel free to stop by and enjoy. Click here to enjoy all of the photos!

Big River Journey Field Trip

Big_river_20071003_0144Katrina's, Mary's & Matt's 5th & 6th grade classrooms took part in science and heritage learning while traveling down the Mississippi River on a beautiful October day.  While cruising down the river, students participated in on-board learning stations that included river birds, aquatic invertebrates, river geology, adopt-a-river crime lab (pollution), river ecosystem, and piloting riverboats.  They began on Harriet Island and cruised to Fort Snelling, where they docked and hiked up to the park center.  Then they participated in one of three activities:  Snelling State Park Artifacts, 1872 Soldier Hike, or the Floodplain Forest Hike.    Click here to see more photos from this fantastic field trip!

Barton Welcomes New Staff

Here is a brief introduction to the remainder of our new (to Barton) teachers and staff.  The other five new staff members were profiled in September.  Click here to see their introductions.

SharonSharon Tyree
Sharon joined the office staff this year. Her job includes spending a lot of time dealing with checks and student data. She is still trying to find her way through all of the varied duties and responsibilities. She has worked for Minneapolis Public Schools since 1980, with twenty-seven years at Armatage while concurrently working at other schools. She likes to travel and enjoys reading, crafting, and spending time with her four grandchildren. She and her husband have recently downsized their home. Their two grown children are both teachers.

Joyce_20071005_0118_2 Joyce Vanderscheuren
All Minneapolis Public Schools now have a Literacy Coach, and Joyce fills this new position at Barton. A literacy coach supports and collaborates with teachers to meet the literacy goals and needs of the school. She is happy to be here and feels lucky that Barton already has a good culture established with our use of literature circles and the Lucy Calkins writing curriculum in the primary grades. She has four K-12 teaching licenses and has taught a wide variety of students and subjects in her career. She lives in our southwest Minneapolis community with her family and golden doodle named Pete.

Cynthia_20071011_0214 Cynthia Wilson
Cynthia is our new teacher working with 5th and 6th grade and kindergarten English language learners (ELL). She splits her day between Barton and Lyndale School. She has previously taught world languages and ELL at preschool (Montessori primary), middle school, high school and college levels. She speaks Japanese and French and is learning Spanish. She is a life long learner that enjoys variety and the challenges of teaching new grades and subjects. Cynthia likes reading and walking around the lakes. Her daughter is in kindergarten at a Chinese immersion school in St. Paul.

Mike_2 Mike Robinson
Mike is our new band teacher. He splits his week between Barton, Seward and Folwell.  He is really busy now, with lots of new beginners at all three schools. Mike has taught Band and Orchestra in Minneapolis schools for 12 years. He comes from a musical family, his dad is a semi-professional vibraphonist.  Mike has always learned new instruments quickly. When he’s bored, he plays an instrument!  You might catch Mike playing bass for the Dakota Valley Symphony or for the Bloomington Symphony.  Parents who want to contact him should feel free to email Mike at michael.robinson@mpls.k12.mn.us.

Lisa_barton Lisa Erwin
Lisa is our new food services manager. For the past fifteen years, she has been working in food services at schools in northeast Minneapolis. She is a busy mom with two daughters and has been spending a lot of time lately on the soccer fields. Her favorite meal? It’s turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy.
